Athirapally waterfalls is called as “Suren Chellakutti Falls”.It is located in Athirappilly Panchayat, Chalakudy Taluk, Thrissur District of Kerala.The west–flowing Chalakudy River plunges from 24m(80 ft)height and 100ft-width to form largest fall in Kerala.Hence called as The Niagara of South India.
The Chalakudy River,originates from Anamudi mountains of the Western Ghats.And flows 145 km long through the Vazhachal Forest toward the Arabian Sea.The river first runs smoothly but becomes more fast as it nears Athirapilly.

District Tourism Promotional council-Thrissur daily operates jungle safaries from Chalakudy to Malakkappara.It is a beautiful tropical forest safari of around 90 km.Forest wildlife in the area includes the Asiatic elephant, tiger, leopard, bison, sambar, and lion-tailed macaque.Night safari is available.The unique 180 m elevation riparian forest in the Athirappilly-Vazhachal area is the only location where all four South Indian species of hornbills-the state bird of Kerala.
Hornbills of four types are found living together.Plantations in the area contain teak,bamboo &eucalyptus.The river provides habitat for 85 species of fresh water fishes. Among these,35 are endemic species.
